# Release a compliance task > The tasks.release operation: POST /api/v1/tasks/{id}/release in the REST API and the tasks_release tool in the MCP server. Gives a task back that the caller holds: its lease ends, it has no assignee and it is `open` again, so someone else can claim it. The checklist and comments stay. The last holder of a lease that already ended may release too.
